Student Engagement That Actually Works: Hypnotic Entertainment With Purpose

student engagement

Student engagement isn’t just a buzzword — it’s the backbone of campus culture. And in a post-pandemic world where students crave connection more than ever, programming that feels meaningful, inclusive, and energizing is essential.

When I was a residence hall director, I saw how important engagement was to student success in the work I did every day. The students who were engaged were happier, got better grades, and developed stronger support systems than the students who were isolated and unengaged. Our department conducted an annual satisfaction survey with with students who lived in the residence halls, and we had twenty years of data that supported what we already knew from doing the work: engaged students are more successful students.

When I left student affairs, I brought a lot of what I learned from that job to the work I was doing as an entertainer in the college market. It was really important to me that I left the old practices of entertainment hypnotism behind and built something that dovetailed with modern campus culture.

That’s where my show, “Mind Games,” stands out. This isn’t just a hypnotist show; it’s a student-centered entertainment experience designed to bring people together in powerful, positive ways.

Moving Beyond Traditional Entertainment

Let’s be honest: not all campus events hit the mark. Students are savvier than ever. They want more than passive entertainment — they want to be part of something.

“Mind Games” delivers just that. With real-time audience polling, the audience votes on what they want to see happen on stage. Then, as the hypnotist, I build what they asked for.  I’m inviting students to co-create the show. I want to reduce that space between the stage and the audience, and bring everybody closer together. If you’re too nervous to volunteer to be hypnotized, you can still be involved and feel like you’re part of the show to some degree.

Purpose-Driven Hypnosis

What sets me apart from other college hypnotists is my sense of purpose. While many shows rely on the basic novelty of hypnosis, or put most of the focus of their show on the comedy aspect of hypnosis shows, “Mind Games” is built around:

  • Empowerment over embarrassment
  • Connection over spectacle
  • Joy over judgment

I place a huge amount of importance on the idea that every show is a chance for me to help someone come to a new realization about themselves; that their mind can do so much more than they previously thought. Just witnessing hypnosis from the audience perspective can do that, and actually getting hypnotized, for some, can be life-changing.

I want students to leave not just entertained, but uplifted. And that kind of emotional resonance pays off long after the show ends.

Perfect for Student Activities Programming

Whether you’re planning Welcome Week, Family Weekend, or a Spring Festival, “Mind Games” fits the bill:

  • Highly Interactive — Built to keep students engaged from start to finish.
  • Scalable Setup — Works in theaters, gyms, or outdoors.
  • Inclusive Vibe — Everyone feels welcome, whether on stage or in the crowd.

If we can get students to attend live entertainment more and more, then we’re creating opportunities for them to connect with new people, be more engaged in their campus community, and get more out of their college experience. I know things have been really challenging for student activities since the pandemic, but we can’t give up. Programming is important and we have to rebuild the culture around live entertainment.

Real Engagement, Real Results

When students feel safe to laugh, move, and share an experience together, something powerful happens. Retention improves. Belonging increases. That’s the magic of meaningful programming.

“Mind Games” isn’t just fun. It’s student-centered entertainment that inspires.
